He purchased his very own workshop in 1478 and begin commissioning paintings from there. His first major project was an altarpiece, the Adoration of the Magi, however he never finished this painting.
In 1482, Leonardo left Florence for Milan, a place known for larger than life expectations and requirements, all of which suited Leonardo’s style. The Duke of Milan asked Leonardo more for military equipment, rather than art, however Leonardo left his mark in a way only Leonardo could. After many years in Milan, Leonardo was commissioned to paint a wall of the new church. His employer asked him for a scene of The Last Supper, and Da Vinci would accept, and change western history.
